EPA orders smog cutback in 22 states

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered stricter smog controls in 22 states from Missouri to Massachusetts. The move was prompted by the EPA's effort to cut air pollution which blows into the Northeast from the Midwest. The tougher smog control is expected to greatly impact the coal-burning power plants in the Midwestern states and other Eastern states. According to EPA Administrator Carol Browner, by calling for a reduction of nitrogen oxides emissions by 28%, the agency could help prevent the increase in smog-related illnesses, such as bronchitis.

Legislators seek new methods to control cable rate increases

Article Abstract:

Lawmakers are seeking ways to elude more cost increases in cable rates, while at the same time inspiring competition, as the lifting of federal controls to harness media monopolies in 1999, nears. In spite of the federal controls, cable rates already climbed four times the rate of inflation in the past tow years. Meanwhile, Rep. Billy Tauzin said that he will launch a legislation that will order cable firms to offer a number of basic packages with various rates, to give consumers a wider selection.

Aetna, Jefferson reach agreement on hospital fees; Covered care for the health maintenance orgaization's members had been threatened at five hospitals

Article Abstract:

Aetna U. S. Healthcare and Jefferson Health Systems have reached an agreement by which the members of the HMO will continue to use the five Jefferson hospitals in the Philadelphia area. At issue was the amount the insurer pays for hospital treatment. Both organizations say the are satisfied with the new agreement but have refused to reveal the terms.
