Buyer beware

Article Abstract:

Online dealing in stocks in the United Kingdom can offer investors lower costs, and greater control and speed, but problems may also arise. Prices are dropping as a result of competition. Some trades cannot easily be carried out online, and investors should assess the extent to which brokers provide telephone support for online clients. Charges may not be transparent and investors should assess charges for online services prior to committing themselves. Meanwhile, day trading has become popular in the US, but is an easy way to lose money.

Trawling the public pocket

Article Abstract:

Most United Kingdom charities tend not to use the internet, though it might appear to be especially suited to charities. Phone calls and direct mailings are more common ways of raising funds. Larger organizations tend to use the internet most. Only a third of UK charities own a computer according to a survey by the National Council of Voluntary Organisations and British Telecom. Oxfam is one charity which is exploring th potential of the internet as a cost-effective way of disseminating information.

More good news for internet investors

Article Abstract:

Charles Stanley is launching internet stockbroking, with a dealing service called Xest. The company aims to use its site for educational purpose as well as dealing. There are four brokers offering internet stock dealing in the UK. Online dealing is far more developed in the US, and UK investors trading in US stocks could use a US online broker. They run currency risks, but they should have the same protection levels as do investors from the US if their broker has authorization from the SEC.
