C and W sells HKT for Chinese expansion

Article Abstract:

A stake of 54% in Hong Kong Telecom (HKT) has been sold by Cable and Wireless to Pacific Century Cyberworks (PCCW). The Chinese government did not directly intervene, but has indicated that it favors PCCW. This deal helps C and W in its plans to expand in China. C and W wil receive a stake of between 15% and 16% in PCCW as well as cash. The cash could be used for the Chinese expansion, and to acquire additional business internet service providers, and strengthen the company's internet protocol network.
