Canada's Most Significant Merger

Article Abstract:

Mergers are growing more popular in Canada. Though often criticized, they have been basically successful in history. The combination of Hudson Bay Company (HBC) and the North West Company in 1821 was a significant and successful merger that restored profitability to the fur trade. HBC was a foreign corporation, based in London, England while the North West was a Montreal, Canada company. Due to a high level of competition, destructive business practices abounded resulting in over trapping and falling prices. The North Westers made overtures beginning in 1815. As in all merger negotiations, there was considerable time spent and bluffing by both parties. Due to many differing methods, policies and different structures, the solution consisted of a joint venture. The key to success involved profit sharing with the operating executives in North America. Combining the organizations also produces large amounts of stress as it did then. The HBC was turning profits within three years. The results of the merger provided rewarding to both invester and executives.
