Chemical and water filters; basic care and maintenance

Article Abstract:

Reftech International Inc. President Robert Laetare lists the benefits and disadvantages of commonly-used filter cartridges. Initially, he said there is a need to understand the function of the chemical and water filters, which are necessary for fine prints and negatives. He emphasizes the importance of knowing the filter's rating, which is expressed in terms of micron value or the amount of particles that could seep through the filter. Laetare cautions against the purchase of filters whose ratings are below the processor's recommendation. The spun polypropylene may be the most appropriate filter because it costs less compared to other types. Aside from this, it is durable, works well and comes in various micron ratings.

What preventive maintenance should be

Article Abstract:

Film labs are advised to establish a preventive maintenance (PM) program. A sound PM may represent an additional cost, but offers long-term benefits to the processor in terms of less down time for emergencies, less expensive repairs, if ever, and longer lifespan for equipment. In following a PM program, the equipment manager should set a schedule that will not interfere with busy periods. Managers should also make a checklist before doing any PM.
