Defense for an uncertain market

Article Abstract:

Insider trading has the damaging effect of raising valuation levels in the market. As a defensive move, investments should be made on companies or stocks that are backed by strong management and solid balance sheets. It is also safe to invest in companies that have successfully completed restructuring or have shown themselves to be industry leaders. Oil and utilities are still safe investments in the large cap market while in the small cap market, fertilizer producers, healthcare and technology stocks offer guaranteed returns.

Current thoughts ...

Article Abstract:

Analysis of insider data for Dec. 1994 shows that the buying activity of insiders continue to take place at an impressive rate despite the prevalence of bearish sentiments. Most notable of all the developments during this period was the strong performance of the Dow Jones Utilities Average, which climbed from under 175 to the 192 range. This indicates that insiders prefer to accumulate issues in sectors whose prospects are strongly linked to interest rate levels.

Central & South West - CSR

Article Abstract:

The price of Central and South West Corp.'s common shares has plunged from $26 down to $18, its lowest level since 1994. This was influenced by three developments: the killing of an electricity deregulation bill, the order to pay $25 M to El Paso Electric for a failed merger deal and the firm's k-filing made on Apr. 8, 1997. However, three insiders still bought a total of 5,397 shares from Mar. 31 to Apr. 21, 1997 at prices ranging from $18.87 to $21 each.
