House subcommittee cuts some Pentagon programs

Article Abstract:

The US House Armed Services Committee (HASC) in April 2006 authorized funding for 20 added Air Force F-22A Raptors and for a second source for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) jet engine. The HASC tactical air and land forces committee took those actions in marking up its portion of the fiscal 2007 National Defense Authorization Act, the military budget for the fiscal year that would begin in October 2006.

House members urged forward on BRAC

Article Abstract:

A pentagon budget official urged House appropriators to move forward with the military base-closing program known as Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) to free up needed funds. BRAC is an ongoing process within the Department of Defense (DOD) that began with the enactment of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990.

Senate rejects bid to kill bunker-buster

Article Abstract:

The Senate voted to reject an amendment by Democratic Sens. Edward Kennedy and Dianne Feinstein that would have knocked off funds for a bunker buster nuclear weapons program. This development would allow funds for further study of nuclear weaponry through a program known formally as the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP).
