LPD, Super Hornets top Mullen's list; McCain blasts costs

Adm. Michael Mullen, chief of naval operations, has told the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) that if funds are available then the main items on the Navy's procurement list would be more ships and aircraft, specifically an LPD amphibious transport ship and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters. Senator John McCain (Republican, Arizona) has stated that Mullen's plan to increase the Navy fleet to 313 ships and submarines from the current 281 might be in jeopardy if the ship costs keeps increasing.

He stated that the Navy would be moving to a predictable, relatively stable shipbuilding funding process that ensures contractors will receive a dependable, requisite stream of orders for ships each year, rather than facing erratic and surprising peaks and valleys in funding.
