LPD, Super Hornets top Mullen's list; McCain blasts costs

Article Abstract:

Adm. Michael Mullen, chief of naval operations, has told the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) that if funds are available then the main items on the Navy's procurement list would be more ships and aircraft, specifically an LPD amphibious transport ship and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters. Senator John McCain (Republican, Arizona) has stated that Mullen's plan to increase the Navy fleet to 313 ships and submarines from the current 281 might be in jeopardy if the ship costs keeps increasing.

Mullen backs DD(X), LCS, CVN 21, JSF, Osprey

Article Abstract:

Adm. Mike Mullen chief of naval operations (CNO) made it clear that he would be a strong proponent of US Navy's shipbuilding programs that he feels require increased funding and more stability. He stated that the Navy would be moving to a predictable, relatively stable shipbuilding funding process that ensures contractors will receive a dependable, requisite stream of orders for ships each year, rather than facing erratic and surprising peaks and valleys in funding.

Adm. Mullen is new CNO, faces multiple challenges

Article Abstract:

Adm. Michael Mullen would face myriad issues after he would presume the position in the Navy from the long-serving chief naval operations, Adm. Vern Clark, which would thus test his determination in future. Clark insisted that apart from existing machines in the Navy there would be growing need for equipments like LCS, DD(X), CG(X) and CVN21.
