Lunar Design

Article Abstract:

Lunar Design Inc. is a graphic design company based in Palo Alto, California. Lunar Design was founded in 1985 by Jeff Smith, Gerard Furbershaw and Bob Brunner. The company has worked for a wide number of clients including Abbott Laboratories and Zenith Data Systems, and worked on products that ranged from garden tools to surgical instruments. The design of the company's multimedia CAD workstation for Silicon Graphics shows Smith's integration of the cultural tradition of craft, individual expressivity of art, and logicality of science. Lunar designed 'Pavilion' Home PC for Hewlett-Packard.

Montgomery-Pfeifer

Article Abstract:

Montgomery-Pfeifer Inc. is a design firm of San Francisco launched by Paul Montgomery and Herbert Pfeifer in 1990. Pfeifer started his career in the German office of frogdesign and served as design director, vice president and general manager in the California office of the company. He directed design work for clients, such as Apple Computer, General Electric and Samsung. Educated at Cranbrook Academy, Paul Montgomery worked for the Chicago firm Design Logic before 1990. The products of Montgomery-Pfeifer Inc. include the new generation network computer JavaStation for Sun Microsystems.

Speck Product Design

Article Abstract:

Speck Product Design, based in Palo Alto, is an engineering-based design firm that concentrates on technical processes. Founded in 1996 by Craig Janik, Speck's greatest achievement has been the wearable computer, developed through the disintegration of hardware for increased flexibility. Janik believes that the open-minded culture of Silicon Valley, with its density of high-tech design firms, is ideal and helpful for their work.
