Notes on Nicholson Baker's 'The Mezzanine.' (novel about design) (Expo)

Article Abstract:

Nicholas Baker's 'The Mezzanine' is a clever and charming novel with the unusually minimal plot of a man who breaks his shoelaces at the office and buys a new pair. However, its heart lies in the protagonist's observations of each object or room he encounters. The design, psychological implications, aesthetic details and practicality of the objects are either appreciated or criticized, while subtle details lead to conclusions about their history. Each object, in turn, leads to another. The book is thus highly recommended for both professional and aspiring designers.

100% digital design

Article Abstract:

Graphic design is increasingly becoming automated with the many innovations in software and hardware designing and printing technology. The Minnesota College of Art and Design made full use of available digital design technology for its 1992-1993 catalog in all stages of production. Numerous processes and state-of-the-art equipment were employed and in spite of some technical difficulties, the final product proved to be both economical and aesthetically satisfying.
