Old money, new markets keep brokers busy

Nielson Cobbold, a stockbroker from Liverpool, England, has merged with Rathbones, a fund manager, while Sun Alliance and Royal Insurance have merged. Both mergers have affected the financial services industry in Liverpool, England. Meanwhile, Chris Broadbent has left his post as chief executive of BWD Rensburg. Stockbrokers have been encouraged to become involved in smaller firms through the Alternative Investment Market (Aim). Brokers are becoming polarised between investment managers and execution-only firms.

Business is booming down at the docks

Article Abstract:

The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company runs the Port of Liverpool and reported a profit of 34 million pounds sterling for 1994, a record year. The company also saw a rise in profit of 5.9% for 1st half 1995. The company invested almost 23 million pounds sterling during 1994 in capital projects at Sheerness, Chatham and Liverpool. Reserves of petroleum and natural gas have also been discovered in Liverpool Bay, which has benefited Liverpool Port.

Squeeze forces brokers to diversify

Stockbrokers in Merseyside, England, have faced increased competition from discount broking Tilney and Co is a broker from Liverpool, England, which has appointed Peter Gardiner to focus on new companies entering the Alternative Investment Market (AIM). Nilson Cobbold is another Liverpool broker and is seeking to have its shares listed in the AIM. BWD Rensburg is a broker operating in Liverpool which is the biggest of Rensburg's offices.
