Shoot-out competition

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom Premier League officals will meet heads of British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) to renegotiate a contract giving BSkyB exclusive rights to soccer broadcasts. The contract is schedule to end in 2001 and BSkyB could lose the rights or they may be renegotiated at a new price. This price would affect valuations of BSkyB. A consultancy hired by the Premier League, called Oliver and Ohlbaum, argues that BSkyB is not paying enough to the Premier League.

Sky looks darker now

Article Abstract:

British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) faces the loss of its chief executive, Sam Chisholm, whic is retiring for medical reasons at the end of 1997. The company may also face opposition to a stake in British Digital Broadcasting (BDB) from the Independent Television Commission. This could lead to direct competition between BSkyB and BDB for soccer and movie rights. BDB is bidding for commercial digital TV multiplexes, as is Digital Television Network.

Channel 4 could be privatised

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Treasury has not take a firm stance on whether Channel 4 should be privatized, though the Secretary of State for Culture, Chris Smith, has denied plans to privatize Channel 4. The government is changing the way that Channel 4 is funded, which has led to increased speculation that privatization is likely. Critics argue that privatizing Channel 4 would alter its character as a provider of alternative TV programming in the UK.
