Embryo-specific silencing of a transporter reduces phytic acid content of maize and soybean seeds

Article Abstract:

The studies have shown that maize Ipa1 mutants are defective in a multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter that is expressed most highly in embryos, but also in immature endosperm, germinating seed and vegetative tissues. Suppressing the homologous soybean MRP gene has generated low-phytic-acid seed, indicating that the strategy might be feasible for many crops.

The ABCs of low-phytate crops

Article Abstract:

A new strategy is described for increasing the available phosphorus content of seeds. An ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter is identified as a key contributor to phytic-acid accumulation in maize and soybean seeds and it is then silenced to engineer a dominant, seed-specific block in phytic-acid accumulation.
