The elusive case for investing overseas

Article Abstract:

UK investors should avoid overseas equities according to correlations between the FTSE All-Share index and the FT/S&P world ex-UK index being near to a record high. Some economists argue the case for purchasing overseas equities, stressing that the correlations may not remain so high, indicating markets have become dominated by global events. As the domination fades cross-country correlations could reduce and the case for overseas investing would be strengthened.

Unique bonds guide

Article Abstract:

UK investors can buy corporate bonds as part of a personal equity plan (Pep). They should buy bonds if they seek income rather than capital growth. Purchasing in large quantities helps to reduce costs. Bonds should be selected in terms of good credit ratings in order to reduce risk. Returns are predictable if bonds are held to maturity. Brokers do not always permit bonds to be included in self-select Peps, so brokers' conditions should be scrutinized.
