UK: BARRMUNDI WINE RANGE EXTENDED

Article Abstract:

Australian wine brand, Barramundi, will be boosted by the addition of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, riesling and verdelho varieties in 2000. The new varieties, which will be offered at between GB[pound] 4.99 and GB[pound] 5.29 in the UK, are aimed at premium wine drinkers. The move by New South Wales-based Cranswick Premium Wines Europe is regarded as an effort to persuade consumers to trade up from the Semillon/chardonnay and shiraz/merlot varieties.

UK: RETAILERS LOOKING TO EXPAND CALIFORNIA WINES

Article Abstract:

UK retailers are becoming increasingly interested in California wines, though guaranteed supply from producers remains a concern. Gallo and Canandaigua are among the reliable leading suppliers, but others have varied their UK interests according to US market fluctuations. The Wine Institute of California, based in London, launched a campaign early in 1999 aiming to double California's share of the UK wine market within five years. International Wine Services (IWS), meanwhile, has joined with Golden State Vintners, one of California's largest wine companies, to launch the Boardwalk range of single varietal wines in Tesco and Oddbins stores. It includes a shiraz, ruby cabernet, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and barrel-fermented chardonnay, retailing between GB[pound] 4.49 and GB[pound] 5.99. IWS hopes that Boardwalk will become a 'signpost brand' for California wines, offering a point of difference from other leading brands. Early reports of the 1999 harvest indicate that the long cool summer could produce one of the better vintages of the decade.
