Let's not be judged by placement outcomes

Article Abstract:

Career services are hardly responsible for negative placement outcomes of undergraduate and professional educational programs. They provide accurate and unbiased placement outcomes and market information to help students and parents in decision making at the time of college admissions. Career services are responsible only for their job reporting. A positive outcome is the result of the student's individual potential and the employer's selection criterion. The selection criterion is influenced by various factors, such as reputation and success rate of the institution and economic condition of the company.

Alternate routes to job-search success

Article Abstract:

Students from the University of California-San Diego were surveyed six months after graduating to find out how they got their jobs and 663 responded. Sixty-eight per cent were in work and the other 32% were still in education. The CSC job listings were used more than any other job hunting method, unlike in 1992 when the listings accounted for just 5% of the jobs. The change has been brought about by an Internet job site linked to other campuses. However, Arts and Communication graduates were more likely to find a job through contacts and work experience than through the listings.

A strategic management model for career services

Article Abstract:

A strategic management approach can bring considerable benefits for career services. This approach covers much more than the content of careers services, as it obliges those managing careers services to gain an insight into the underlying structures, into the networks of relationships and into the processes operating in careers programmes. Strategic planning is an independent set of activities that must be integrated into a wider management structure if they are to be really effective.
