GERMANY: GEBR. SCHMIDT CONCENTRATES PRODUCTION

Article Abstract:

The German Frankfurt-based company Gebr. Schmidt GmbH has set up a new production plant in Cologne. The new facility that involved an investment of a "double-digit million amount" takes over the production of black printing ink from three existing sites. Production capacity was increased only slightly, but the new plant can easily be expanded. Gebr. Schmidt claims to be Germany's leading producer of illustration rotogravure printing inks and newspaper printing inks and claims a key position also in the markets for packaging and offset inks. The company has a market share of 23% in Germany and accounts for 25% of the country's printing ink exports. Rotogravure inks account for 66% of Gebr. Schmidt's production volume and 52% of value, while offset inks account for 24%/29% and specialist colours 10%/19%, respectively. Partly as a result of the new modern factory, Gebr. Schmidt has been able to reduce the number of staff, which now amounts to about 1,000 worldwide. The company that generates an annual turnover of well over DM 500mn expects favourable results in year 2000.
