Generalized interface polariity scale based on second harmonic spectroscopy

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine quantitative polarity scales based on second harmonic spectroscopy. The polarity of various liquid/liquid and vapor/liquid interfaces was determined following the demonstration that second harmonic spectroscopy can be utilized in the measurement of interface polarity. Results indicate the possible dominance of the long-range solute-solvent interactions in determining the difference in the excited- and ground-state solvation energies of the interface adsorbed molecules.

In situ studies of molecular transfer between microparticles by second-harmonic generation

Article Abstract:

The applicability of the second-harmonic generation (SHG) method in studying the kinetics of molecular transfer between microparticles suspended in aqueous solution is demonstrated. The demonstration founded that the transfer of malachite green (MG) from the polystyrene sulfate (PSS) particles to clay particles can be monitored in real time by measuring the surface population of MG remaining on the polystyrene (PSS) particles.

Protein adsorption at interfaces detected by second harmonic generation

Article Abstract:

A method is presented based on second harmonic generation for detection of proteins adsorbed to interfaces and in the presence of bulk species. The free energy of adsorption of cytochrome c to glass was determined from an adsorption isotherm measurement of the second harmonic signal as a function of the bulk protein concentration.
