Partitioning of charged local anesthetics into model membranes formed by cationic surfactant: effect of hydrophobicity of local anesthetic molecules

Article Abstract:

Experiments were performed to investigate the division of local anesthetics into surface-adsorbed films and micelles formed by the surfactant decylammonium chloride (DeAC). The hydrochloride salts of five local anesthetics which includes lidocaine and bupivacaine were examined. In addition, hydrophobicity and surface tension in the molecular aggregates of DeAC were analyzed. The findings confirmed the active role of hydrophobicity and geometric arrangement of the aggregates in the partitioning of anesthetic molecules.

The surfactant-polyelectrolyte analogy

Article Abstract:

The self-assembly of ionic surfactants in aqueous solutions into giant flexible wormlike micelles that behave as equilibrium polyelectrolytes is investigated. Results showed that using giant wormlike micelles assembled from nonionic surfactants provides a narrower distribution about surface charge density. Changing the hydrocarbon chain length of the surfactant allows for the adjustment of the intrinsic component of the persistence length.
