Computers Can Make Office Records More Private

Article Abstract:

Contrary to popular preconception, computers can actually strengthen the security and enhance the privacy of sensitive corporate information. It all depends on how the machines are used and how the system is designed. The confidentiality of employee databases is a case in point. Some general guidelines are to store relevant and necessary information only, to avoid or eliminate superfluous duplication, and to choose the right hardware, personal computers for individuals, mainframes or minicomputers for conditions under which many people must have access to the machine. Precautionary measures should be part of the system from the very start. Employees should be told what kind of information about them is being kept, why it is being kept, and who can properly get to it.

Western Union, DHL Offer Two-Hour Delivery Amid Financial Woes

Article Abstract:

With the introduction of a new express-document service, Western Union and DHL Worldwide Courier Express will try to merge the potentials of quick, overnight delivery and electronic mail. The joint venture does not however appear to be a promising one. Interest in electronic mail is, as of early 1985, not running strong and, further, a similar utility, Zapmail, from Federal Express, has not been at all successful.

CAR: The Vehicle For Records Delivery

Article Abstract:

Locating documents and records can be frustrating. Microfiche itself does not alleviate the problem. A computer-assisted retrieval (CAR) system automates the look-up process. Different types of indices can accomplish this. Most CAR systems store data on the documents, not the documents themselves.
