Fibre Optics: The Age of the Photon

Article Abstract:

In the early 1980s, Mercury Communications was licensed to furnish the United Kingdom with a new telecommunications network. Lasers, fiber optics, and optoelectronic devices generally are expected to play a major role in the network. With a pulse of light for 'one' and a gap of darkness for 'zero' digital information can be passed through fiber optical material at a rate of up to 2000 million bits per second (bps). As of 1985, the newest laser and fiber optic systems are 250 times faster than conventional copper wire technologies. By the 1990s, fiber optic networks may become an effective and reasonably cheap alternative to launching communications satellites. Photographs of fiber optic cables are included.

Cementing the Relationship

Article Abstract:

A new corrosion resistant concrete has been developed that uses a chemically modified sulpher base instead of Portland cement and water. This new composite material is available commercially at a price that is slightly higher than regular cement. Sulphur concrete is also fast setting and very resistant to acids, sulphates and other salts. It can be used for highway and factory floor repair and any place which is exposed to corrosive materials. Graphs show the concrete mix design and typical aggregate gradations. A photograph compares concretes which were immersed in acid.

Newtech - A Recipe for Success

Article Abstract:

Newtech is a research venture designed to provide research and development expertise to small companies with budgets that preclude development projects. Established last year at the North East Wales Institute, the venture also hopes to attract new industries to the area. Newtech's research will include biotechnology, robotics, and control-systems. A word-processor chip named EDWORD has already been developed and is being marketed by Clwyd Technics.
