Managing Manufacturing Operations in the U.K

Article Abstract:

Results of a survey by the British Institute of Management (BIM) concerning management of manufacturing operations are explored. Areas covered were career background of managers, characteristics of operations, and use of computers and management techniques. Salient characteristics of managers are listed. Characteristics of operations include nature of customer orders, product mix, manufacturing lead times and customer delivery times, assemble lead times, and performance against customer delivery promises. Production planning and control systems showed the most use. Later studies are employed to identify issues in United Kingdom industrial performance. Tables and figures are included. An appendix describes the BIM survey sample.

Mitsubishi invests heavily in French operations

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi Electric Corp will spend FF3.5 million in its factories in Bretagne, France, in an effort to boost yearly production four times from 1998 to reache six million Global System for Mobile Communications phones. Beginning in 2001, company management will increase the mobile communications research and development staff from 120 engineers to approximately 300 engineers, who will concentrate on R&D for GSM and upcoming Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service systems.

Manufacturing's Strategic Role

Article Abstract:

Specialists are often used in production management. The relationship between line managers and specialists is a problem. The roles of these two are considered. Manufacturing's role in the strategic strength of the company is detailed. The effect of manufacturing upon marketing decisions is emphasized. Two examples are given. Tables and other illustrative figures are included.
