Reaching for the Million-Transistor Chip

Article Abstract:

Limits on the ability to design and build complex VLSI circuits will show up in the next generation of computers. Given the complexity of Japan's goal of one million transistors or more on a chip, the circuit designer must handle his work carefully. Hierarchical decomposition of design allows the design to be assembled in smaller, organized pieces to simplify conceptual models and implementation. The use of regular structures such as programmable logic arrays and systolic arrays also aids in reducing circuit complexity. Another way to deal with complexity is through automated circuit design and layout tools. A chip with regular structures is illustrated.
