Vertical Recording Closer to the Market

Article Abstract:

Perfection of a vertical magnetic recording system will mean a significant upgrade for floppy disks. Work is being done on magnetic coating because of the problems associated with floppy disks. Using the sputtering method, it may be possible to have a 10,000 bpi rate. A drawback is that the surface is worn down by contact with the head. FD output may be sixty-four percent over 1983 figures and companies are now moving into direct sales. Photographs of several brands of floppy disks are included.
