A suitable job for a woman

Article Abstract:

The UK Construction Act will have a positive impact, according to new Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association (HVCA) Pres Ann Justice. She believes that one of her main responsibilities is to encourage greater training initiatives among contractors. She is keen to see more young people enter the industry, and believes that the HVCA should establish a higher profile in schools and colleges. She believes that she has been accepted within the HVCA, even though she is the organization's first female president.

Exstrawdinary

Article Abstract:

Welsh organic farmer and shepherd Brian Stinchcombe has been able to build a one-bedroom, single-storey house using large bales of very compacted straw. The structure is held together by wire which runs horizontally around the building and is set firm in the foundations. The house is currently finished with lime-based rendering plaster, but will eventually have a finish made up of lime and pea gravel. The straw bales will provide a much higher level of insulation than manufactured thermal blocks.

The end of the bend

Article Abstract:

Hepworth Building Products' HepvO self-sealing plastic valve is designed to prevent foul-air ingress and make the installation of plumbing systems easier. It can be fitted vertically or horizontally in place of the U-bend, and has a purpose-designed elastomer which acts as a gate. This opens when a 3 mm head of water is present, and closes when air pressure builds up from below. It prevents siphonage, and thus allows installation pipes to be reduced in size.
