Big in Japan

Article Abstract:

Companies which have worked with private finance initiatives (PFI) in their own counties are likely to be able to benefit from the introduction of PFI in Japan. British firms may find it useful to employ workers with a good knowledge of Japanese people, business customs and language. Some industry observers suggest PFI will take a long time to be established in Japan as the government has always had control over all major building projects. It is predicted some 5 billion pounds sterling worth of PFI contracts will be available in Japan. The PFI bill is due to be introduced in Summer 1999.

The architectural practice of Bryant Priest Newman has been particularly successful in the loft conversion market. The practice, which is the only UK Midlands practice named in a list of 100 potential architectural stars, has worked on a number of conversions in Birmingham's city centre. These conversions include a former telecommunications office building which now houses 65 apartments. Penthouse apartments in this high-rise block are selling for up to 250,000 pounds sterling.

In person

Article Abstract:

The UK labour government is being advised on environmental and planning issues by a former member of the Foreign Office, Sir Crispin Tickell. Partnering legislation and a greater empathy with environmental surroundings are two of the main focuses for Tickell, who believes unsuccessful buildings should be re-designed and re-directed. Tickell would like to see more use made of local materials during construction projects, creating a greater awareness of community spirit.
