There will be a number of significant trends in the UK construction industry in 2000. On-line procurement will become firmly established, while sustainability will become a key issue as the construction industry comes under pressure to become more environmentally-friendly. There will also be growing emphasis on respect for people and on new approaches to overcoming skills shortages, including off-site assembly and prefabrication. Key personalities in the construction industry will include architect Robin Snell and Gardiner & Theobald Senior Partner Simon Jones.

Commercial work set to decline in next two years

Article Abstract:

The construction industry forecasts for 2001 and 2002 are presented. The office and retail sector is expected to drop but spending on repair and maintenance of public housing is forecast to grow by 7% between 2000 and 2002.

Article Abstract:

E-commerce and the Internet are changing the nature of retailing and the popularity of online shopping is set to change the business of the construction industry. Where once they built shopping centres and offices, by 2005 contractors will be erecting adaptable buildings suitable for multi-occupancy, combining office space, serviced apartments, fitness centres and hotels, while server farms and gateway complexes will abound.
