Cost update

Article Abstract:

There was almost no change at all in construction materials prices in the UK in the second and third quarters of 1998. There has been a rise in construction workloads and higher demand for products, but most manufacturers have not found it necessary to increase prices, as the strength of the pound continues to have a positive impact on raw material costs. The margin between building tender prices in Greater London, England, and elsewhere has increased, but this trend may be reversed by the anticipated fall in the growth of commercial activity in London.

Cost update

Article Abstract:

Input costs to UK industry have risen overall since mid-1999. However, construction and housebuilding materials firms continue to report declining costs year on year. Material price rises should be restricted by the sharp rise in the pound following the interest rate rise in Aug 1999. According to the Office of National Statistics, a representative basket of construction materials fell in price by 1.9% in the period since the end of 1998. However, there are substantial variations between trends for individual materials.

Cost update

Article Abstract:

The largest increase in construction industry workload in the UK over the next few years is likely to come in Greater London, where there is rising commercial activity and many projects are being funded by the millennium fund and the national lottery. For this reason, tender price increases could be higher in Greater London than in other parts of the UK. In the civil engineering sector, costs rose by 4.5% in the year to the fourth quarter of 1996, with costs being boosted mainly by coated roadstone and gas oil.
