Open market

Article Abstract:

There are still significant opportunities for UK construction companies in central and eastern Europe. It is widely acknowledged that Poland has the strongest construction market in the region, although strong growth is also forecast for Hungary and the Slovak Republic in 1999. Having a strong presence in the more established central European countries could allow UK construction companies to move into less mature markets in the region, such as Ukraine and Latvia. Latest construction projects in central and eastern Europe are focusing on meeting the consumer demand of the local population.

Councils forced into Egan era

Article Abstract:

Best-value procurement will become a statutory requirement for UK local authorities after the Local Government Bill comes into effect in Apr 2000. Construction consultants and contractors feel that this development has the potential to offer more opportunities in areas such as local authority transport and housing. However, there is a risk that some local authorities will interpret best value as indicating that they should improve their existing methods rather than adopting radical new approaches.

The resurrection man

Article Abstract:

The Canary Wharf development is enjoying a new lease of life, according to George Iacobescu, chief executive of Canary Wharf Ltd. The second phase of development is now taking place, and the 67,500 sq mt Riverside hotel, leisure and residential scheme is due to go on site in spring 1997. Negotiations are taking place with potential clients for three vacant plots to the east of the Canada Square tower, and Iacobescu believes that all the buildings on the marketing model will eventually be built.
