Desert island disks

Article Abstract:

Portable computers are rapidly overtaking desktop models, and are particularly useful in the construction industry, where people frequently work away from the office. It is not always necessary to have very high capacity equipment, and the likely applications of the computer should be considered before purchasing. The Apple Computer laptop PowerBook range, for example, uses a 'trackball' to incorporate the mouse-based operating system, while the Psion Series 3 palmtop can run DOS-compatible software and has a free wordprocessor. The Dell Computer 320N+ has high processing power, and the Husky Computers FS/2 pc is designed for use in hostile environments.

The great complainer

Article Abstract:

It is wrong that housebuilders in the UK are allowed to set their own standards, according to National Association of New Home Owners founder Chris Lorentzen. He rejects the consumer panel set up by the National House Builders Council in Sep 1998, and believes that there should be a completely independent regulator with strong powers to name housebuilders failing to reach acceptable standards. He claims that the dependence of housebuilders on lowest price subcontract produces poor quality workmanship.

Economical with the roof

Article Abstract:

A monopitched steel roof is a key feature of the refurbishment of John Scurr House, a 1937 five-storey tenement block in Limehouse, London, England. The white, powder-coated steel roof protrudes 2 mt over the fifth-floor walkway and uses perforated facia panels to ensure cross-ventilation, which is often a problem with monopitched roofs. It has two layers of 100 mm insulation in the void to insulate against the sound of rain.
