CA Governor passes 3-year ban on e-taxes; anti-spam law next

Article Abstract:

California Governor Pete Wilson has signed into law Internet Tax Freedom Act, a three-year ban on new taxes on online purchases and Internet access late August 1998. Wilson said the state should lead the policy debate concerning ways to keep Internet a vibrant avenue for opportunity and growth. The governor also received an anti-spam bill from the California Legislature, another measure expected to be signed into law. California Internet Tax Freedom Act exempts Internet merchants with no physical presence in the state from collecting sales tax on items sold in California, effective January 1, 1999.
