EC Directive gives teeth to greens

Article Abstract:

The planned European Community Directive on civil liability for damage caused by waste is being opposed by many involved in the waste industry for a number of reasons. It aims to obtain compensation for those who have suffered from damage caused by waste, but its critics point out that it sets no restrictions on liability and no obligatory insurance, and also does not allow defence on the basis of the best practice used by the industry at a given time. The fifth environmental action programme, which will run during the period 1992-2000, may establish compensation for environmental damage, and a framework may be set up in which the polluter will have to take responsibility for or rectify any environmental damage.

Denmark's plans for the environment

Article Abstract:

Denmark took over the EC (European Community) presidency on Jan 1 1993 and is focusing on environmental issues. It hopes to ratify the fifth action programme for the environment, towards sustainability which provides legislation up to 2000. Participation is welcomed by all industrial active companies who must comply with conditions such as, undertaking environmental reviews and audits. Participating companies will be able to use the 'eco-audit label.' Aproaches to packaging and packaging waste need to be sorted. Emission standards for hazardous waste incineration and petrol emission are a priority.

EC finely tunes environment code

Article Abstract:

The European Commission completed its review on the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessments) directive in Aut 1992. It covered the extent of implementation in member states. The EIA is an analysis of the environmental consequences of infrastructural projects. The Commission wants projects to be environmentally assessed earlier than the planning stage. It wants better monitoring of projects, more public consultation and extend the types of projects covered. Project promoters should provide full information to show that they have explored other sites.
