EC to act on safe harbor vote

Article Abstract:

The European Commission (EC) will discuss the European Parliament's resolution requesting the EC to reopen talks with the US over the 'safe harbor' issue relating to data transmission before announcing its next move. Both the US and EU have tacitly agreed not to interrupt data flow from the EU to the US although no formal moratorium on the ban of the data flow exists. The European Parliament's resolution is not legally binding, but the EC is unlikely to ignore it as the parliament could take the EC to court on charges of exceeding its powers.

German phone prices plummet amid merger fever

Article Abstract:

German phone call rates registered the steepest drop among European Union (EU) countries since the EU deregulated the telecommunications industry in Jan 1998. Phone service rates fell 11.4% in May 1999, 12.4% in Jun 1999 and 12.5% in Jul 1999, according to the German office for government statistics. As a result of the additional competition in the domestic market, German telecommunication companies are setting their sights on acquisitions overseas.
