First person: singular successes

Article Abstract:

The overall impression of buildings and monuments along the banks of the river Thames in London is a total lack of commonality despite many of the attractions being excellent examples of engineering in their own rights. The newly constructed London Eye ferris wheel towers over all other buildings along the Thames creating a focal point which fails to deliver more than a haphazard array of buildings. More planning should have been given to the structures placed along the river and the relationship between each one.

Star of the big screen

Article Abstract:

The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, England, is completing a 16 million pounds refurbishment programme. The changes have improved the display areas of the 1960s building, which the museum took over in 1983. However, the most obvious change is the addition of a vast, curved, 5-storey glass frontage. The museum has also added a third cinema auditorium to the existing facilities, which include an IMAX theatre.

First person

Article Abstract:

British architecture appears to have lost its way at the end of 1998, with a rash of buildings being planned to celebrate the millennium. The 170 million pound sterling Lowry Centre will be built at the Salford Quay's development in Manchester, with the specific purpose of housing 330 paintings completed by the painter Lowry. The British are incapable of designing strong, distinctive buildings which stand out as different.
