Good house keeping

Article Abstract:

The Housing Act 1988 and the Housing Corporation's promotion of cost saving through volume bid development is placing the quality of social housing at risk for the benefit of short-term cost savings. However, design and build schemes can be successful if the client uses its experience of public housing and has an awareness of the needs of consumers. The brief should be clear while elements such as frontage width, arrangement of the external spaces and detailing must be carefully designed. A new form of contract is needed for public housing design and build schemes.

High society

Article Abstract:

Japanese architects have shown that it is possible to achieve high quality design even with high-density social housing developments. The Japanese housing programme produces 1.5 million homes every year, and this allows high design and construction standards to be maintained and ensures that publicly funded housing organisations can undertake research work. Designs are superficially similar to those used in Europe, but many architects put in features which give developments individuality.

In 1970 Islington's Marquess Estate was the future of social housing. Now it is being 'eradicated'. Was the architect to blame? Or the housing authority?

Article Abstract:

Islington Council in North London, England, plans to spend 48 million pounds sterling on the redevelopment of the Marquess Estate in Islington, London, England. Over one quarter of the 1970's 1600-strong housing estate will be knocked down and rebuilt. The original design has not been effective, despite winning awards at the time of erection, says councillor Joe Simpson. The building programme will use 9.5 million pounds sterling of government funding.
