IT breakthrough cuts overrun risk

Article Abstract:

Software for forecasting building costs with greater speed and accuracy has been developed in a UK project. Quantity surveyors Turner and Townsend, the University of Reading and the British Airports Authority (BAA) have collaborated on the project. They claim the programme can forecast costs to within 5%. Computer models are built up from drawings of building components together with data and performance criteria. Elements react when another element is altered so it is particularly suitable for repeat clients using standard details as in the case of BAA.

Hazard warning

Article Abstract:

The U.K's Construction (Design and Management) regulations came into force in April 1995 and require construction industry clients and designers to ensure that their structures can be built safely. The new rules create the need for a planning supervisor, whose responsibility is to ensure that safety issues are addressed during the project's early stages. However, some in the industry believe that the regulations generate too much paperwork, while there is confusion over the planning supervisor's role.
