Valuations of antiques and jewellery are not reliable. They vary, leading to over- or under-insurance, or paying inessential tax. Auction houses, jewellers and antique dealers give valuations. Qualifications from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Incorporated Society of Valuers or the National Association of Goldsmiths are good credentials. Charges for valuation vary but auction houses value free if the goods are for sale. Insurance claims require proof of ownership, which can be valuations.
