Lower paper prices don't bring relief

Article Abstract:

Paper prices decreased as much as 15%, but catalogers say this has little effect on their businesses. This is because most catalogers are facing additional rate increases in 2001, eroding consumer confidence and the slow economy. According to Donald Cooke, VP of direct sales at Westport, CT-based Midland Paper, some paper mills have reduced paper prices 10%, and 15% for higher quality including glossy paper used by high-end magazines. Mills are being affected by the economy and postage rate competitions that are forcing catalogers to reconsider business plans.

Hodges Badge's Equestrian book matches Web look

Article Abstract:

Hodge Badge Co on Jan 16, 2001 mailed 14,000 copies of its Equestrian 2001 annual awards catalog that features new addition and the return of a few award items. The drop was part of a print run of 40,000, with the additional copies reserved for catalog requests received through the firm's Web site and toll-free-number. Printed on No 2 stock at about $1.90 a book, the catalog resembles the appearance of its Web site. The catalog has kept customer photographs that feature Hodges Badge awards, which has been an effective selling tool.

Few changes seen for paper pricing

Article Abstract:

Midland Paper Co VP Donald D Cooke has warned catalogers not to hold out for bargains for their summer and fall books because paper prices are expected to remain stable over the next several months. Catalogers are seen to focus more on paper prices after having had time to digest the latest postal increases. Cooke does not recommend buying paper in bulk so far in advance because it limits a cataloger's ability to make changes and it ties up cash.
