MCI-Spring merger not expected to cut DM

Article Abstract:

MCI WorldCom Inc of Jackson, FL, has announced a deal to accuire Sprint Corp of Overland Park, KS, for $115 billion. The merger, which is the largest in US history, was proposed amidst increased competition from a growing crop of long-distance and local service providers. The new company is expected to preserve Sprint brand as the more high-value option with MCI as the price-value brand. MCI and Sprint spent $381.5 million and $227.5 million on advertising in the 1st half 1999, respectively.

American List Counsel Inc (ALC) of Princeton, NJ, and Direct Media Inc of Greenwich, CT, are planning to merge to form a new company. The merger is expected to benefit companies because it will combine Direct Mail's entrepreneurial, marketing-oriented style with ALC's data analysis capabilities and other data base services. DMI was acquired by Acxiom Corp for $25 million in stock, currently valued at around $52 million.

Sagging financials doom music merger

Article Abstract:

Columbia House Inc and CDnow Inc have dissolved their merger agreement due to the financial troubles that each company is encountering. Both, however, hope to leverage each other's strengths by pursuing the same objectives. The cancellation of the merger plan is attributable to a slowdown in Columbia House's business and the revised financial projections proposed by the new executive team of the company.
