On the up

Article Abstract:

The Scottish construction industry is thriving, with architects fees rising and retail rents in Edinburgh, Scotland, increasing by more than 6% in 1999. The office market in Edinburgh and Glasgow are buoyant, with some speculative development likely to go ahead. Legal firms dealing in construction are also experiencing a boom and are taking on more staff. Some large building projects are planned for 2000, such as the Harvey Nichols department store in Edinburgh. There was some concern Scottish devolution would lead to raised taxes in Scotland causing a decline in the construction industry.

Salford wins silver

Article Abstract:

The 60 million pounds sterling Lowry Centre, a theatre and gallery designed by Michael Wilford and Partners in Salford, England, is due to open in Apr 2000. There are indications that this project will revive the Salford Quays area as a whole, boosting house prices and presenting strong competition for the centre of Manchester, England. The project is presenting challenges for construction manager Bovis because of its raking walls and the fact that many of the materials are bespoke.
