Out of England

Article Abstract:

It is worth leaving a career while you still enjoy it, according to Eric Loe, former director of quantity surveying firm Northcroft. He is now embarking on a four-month journey around Africa with his wife Lindsay Neil as the first stage in a two-year round-the-world trip. He has used his financial planning and project management expertise to considerable advantage to plan their trip, and has also given consideration to what they will do when they return. They will relocate from London, England, possibly to the Welsh borders, and will build their own home.

Mirror, mirror

Article Abstract:

Novelist Banana Yoshimoto has gained recognition in the West, as well as in her native Japan. Her five novels focus on themes including self-discovery and alienation from traditional cultural values. They reflect the changes which industrialization brings to individuals. Yoshimoto won fame at the age of 23 when she received the 1987 Kaien Prize for new writers for her first novel, Kitchen. Critics consider Yoshimoto to be the leading figure of a new group of Japanese writers whose work crosses cultural boundaries.

Weighing up bathroom scales

Article Abstract:

Electronic scales generally give readings accurate to within 1 kg when new, but the performance of mechanical scales can be mixed. The most consistently accurate and easy-to-read scales are the Salter 942 and the Tanita 1618. Of mechanical scales tested, the Salter 427 and the Hanson Cork 825 Economy offer best value for money, although the former are not as convenient to use or easy to read as the latter. The EKS Deluxe 1733 and Soehnle 7136 digital scales offer good value.
