Paxson says paid programming boosted growth

Article Abstract:

Paxson Communications Corp., a television station operator based in West Palm Beach, FL, reported a 66% increase in total revenues for the first half of 1998, to $62 million from $37.4 million of the same period in 1997. However, its operating cash flow dropped 9% to $10.1 million. Paxson attributes the decrease from costs associated with its launch of another broadcast network, Pax TV, the national family entertainment network slated to debut by the end of August 1998. Despite the decreases, the company believes that paid programming will continue to serve as its foundation, using it to leverage its massive distribution assets through the development of Pax TV.

Consortium wins $540 million contract to upgrade China Post

Article Abstract:

An IBM-led joint venture of three western companies and a Chinese company has received a $540 million contract to computerize China Post. The joint venture is composed of IBM, TRW, Stone Electronics, and China's Legend Holding. The technological upgrade of China Post is expected to attract direct marketers from the US, which have held back from entering the China market despite efforts from USPS. According to a London-based analyst, he hopes that the upgrade would make the Chinese government realize that direct mail is a major source of revenue and that they may take a more commercial approach to how a post office is operated.
