Publisher looks for US partner as law eases

Article Abstract:

Telemedia Communications Inc, a leading magazine publisher in Canada, is searching for a minority partner in the US to help it create Canadian versions of major publications in the US. The Montreal-based company is considering Hearst Corp, Time Warner Inc and Meredith Corp as candidates for the planned partnership. Meanwhile, Telemedia is speculated to divest its publishing assets following the imposition of new rules that allow foreign publishers to buy assets in Canada.

Companies find gold in customer billing process

Article Abstract:

Billing and collection firm North Shore Agency of Great Neck, NY, has announced a significant increase in the number of Canadian companies that are using billing as a customer-retention and marketing tool. The company said although revenues at its Canadian division is split between billing and sales, its billing services has been posting substantial growth. The Canadian division is focused mainly on the direct marketing and publishing sectors.

Canada and US face off over split-run magazine issue

Article Abstract:

A Canadian bill seeks to ban so-called split-run magazines, or Canadian editions of international magazines that contain little Canadian content. Bill C-55, as it is called, does this by preventing Canadian advertisers from buying space in split-run magazines. The legislation is seen as a weapon against US titles that have flooded the Canadian market. The US, however, is protesting that the legislation violates international trade rules.
