Sporting chance

Article Abstract:

The city council of Manchester, England, is determined to perform well in its hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. It also sees the games as important for the image of the UK construction industry and the country in general. The council denies allegations that it is short of finance for its ambitious construction plans. It will announce, in Apr 1999, the results of tendering to build the 48,000-seat stadium. A four-pool swimming complex is under construction in partnership with Manchester's universities, and the council is keenly promoting an increase in hotel space in the city.
