Article Abstract:

The market for measurement and control equipment is expected to reach 253 million pounds sterling by 2002, although value growth is being obstructed by falling prices. The measurement instruments market is dominated by flow and temperature equipment with a value share of just under 73%, with pressure measurement accounting for 17.5% and level measurements representing around 10% of total sales. Market leaders in the measurement sector include ABB Kent Taylor and Fisher Rosemount, while Endress & Hauser leads the level measurement sector. It is estimated that the UK measurement instruments market will grow by 11.9% between 1997 and 2002.

Talent spot

Article Abstract:

Building surveyors are not given enough recognition, according to Alison Smith, associate partner at building surveyor Povall Worthington. Smith believes that within the surveying sector there is too much pigeonholing. In her view, building surveyors' wide breadth of experience makes them the ideal choice for project management. Smith currently heads the Warrington, UK, office of Povall Worthington, and is set to become the firm's first female partner.

Cease-fire in Northern Ireland - the phoney peace

Article Abstract:

The ceasefire declared by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) faces the possibility of being rescinded due to the British government's hardline stance on various issues. It includes the issue on the decommissioning of IRA weapons and the release of a British soldier who was convicted of raping Irish teenager Karen Riley. Various political factors indicate a low probability for the signing of an agreement in the near future.
