German mobile phone auction 'economic insanity'

Article Abstract:

Some telecommunications companies and industry analysts were surprised by the very high bids for licenses to operate the third generation mobile telephones in Germany. The six bidders paid about $45.85 billion, a price considered to be too huge that could likely put a heavy mortgage on UMTS companies, users and the technology itself. However, proponents believe that competition will prevent prices of Internet-enabled mobile phone service from soaring.
