The hod squad: any pick-up in housing volumes is tipped to expose a chronic shortage of able bricklayers

Article Abstract:

The Construction Industry Board (CIB) has called on the industry to seek new ways of training craft workers and site operatives. Brick manufacturers are the first suppliers to consider supply-and-fix contracts, supplying both bricks and bricklayers. The shortage of bricklayers is worsening, and Clive Drinkwater, managing director of Persimmon's Wessex Division, believes that manufacturers should be helping to sponsor apprentices.

Choice cut

Article Abstract:

Small housebuilders are at a disadvantage when it comes to purchasing kitchens for their houses, because they are not offered the large discounts that volume housebuilders enjoy. Sourcing deals which involve one or two suppliers are becoming popular in the industry because of the savings that can be made. Some fitted kitchens are being sold so cheaply that they only amount to approximately 1.1% of the sale price.
