The sound of silence

Article Abstract:

ABB Flakt of Sweden, an air-conditioning equipment maker, has developed a silencer to make its air-conditioning units quieter. The active noise control system uses anti-noise-inverted soundwaves to reduce the noise that the air-handling unit creates. However, it is only effective against low-frequency noise. The system, known as Aktipass, cost 1.2 million pounds sterling to develop.

Pump action

Article Abstract:

Competition amongst petrol retailers has caused some to turn their filling stations into mini supermarkets. Many have turned to modular building methods to reduce construction times by more than half, as much of the existing building stock is unsuitable for refitting. There is also more design flexibility in prefabricated units and there are lower transport costs.
