ABB Flakt of Sweden, an air-conditioning equipment maker, has developed a silencer to make its air-conditioning units quieter. The active noise control system uses anti-noise-inverted soundwaves to reduce the noise that the air-handling unit creates. However, it is only effective against low-frequency noise. The system, known as Aktipass, cost 1.2 million pounds sterling to develop.

Many have turned to modular building methods to reduce construction times by more than half, as much of the existing building stock is unsuitable for refitting.
