What goes up...: Instead of worrying about whether or not the Greenwich dom will be built, we should be longing for its completion and ensuring that, once the millennium celebrations are over, it is pulled down

Article Abstract:

The Millennium Dome at Greenwich in south-east London, is a project promoted by the then Conservative governemnt. New Labour also considered the dome to be high priority, and the Conservative opposition then opposed the completion of the project, saying that the cost of building the dome would be too much. The idea that the dome will be taken down some years after its completion could be contemplated and the site reused, as with other previous temporary exhibitions.

Enlightenment: Architect Spencer de Gray rewrote the manual on natural light use at Stansted Airport. How did he meet the much tougher challenge of a new biomedical school in London?

Article Abstract:

Architect Spencer de Grey designed the new biomedical school for Imperial College in Kensington, London. The building was flanked by tall buildings with just two faces providing natural light and views, the roof and the northern facade. The northern elevation was entirely glazed. The roof is based on simple northlights seen in industrial buildings, and is a series of glazed waves with an internal louvre of aluminium tubes, which diffuse the light.
