Food for thought

Article Abstract:

The UK's largest supermarkets now attract many customers, particularly because they offer a wide range of services. It now seems likely that the future of food retailing in the UK will be in the hands of a very small number of large players. Convenience stores have traditionally enjoyed a strong niche position, but even they are now facing competition from supermarkets, which are developing smaller, convenience-format in-town stores. Some observers believe that large out-of-town supermarkets encourage people to use cars rather than public transport and discriminate against the poor.

Antibiotics in food

Article Abstract:

Antibiotics have been routinely used for some time in the rearing of animals, both to treat infection and to prevent the spread of infection. There is now growing concern that bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, with serious implications for human health. Furthermore, the present of antibiotic residues in foods may cause other health problems, including allergies. There is evidence that an antibiotic which is a type of sulphonamide is linked with thyroid cancer.
